Degrees In Your Birth Chart

So if you are anything like me, you have checked and analysed your birth chart but have thought what in the heck are those little numbers and degrees. Most importantly, what do they mean? Well, let's get into it, shall we? One of the most confusing things about studying Astrology tends to be grasping the mechanics behind a birth chart.

Decans

So as we all know, there are 12 signs in the zodiac, but what you may not have known is that within each sign, there are 30 degrees. Each zodiac sign will have three sets of decans contained within it - these decans equally add up to 30 degrees. The first decan of any sign goes from 0 - 9 degrees, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. The second then follows with 10 - 19 degrees, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. Then lastly, the third decan goes from 20 - 29 decans, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. So it does not matter which sign you look at - it will have three sets of decans. Another thing to mention is that there are 60 minutes in every degree, but as you can see, we do not use 60 as the minute marker. Instead, we go from 0 (being 1) to 59 ( being 60).

What do you get when you multiply 12 by 30? You get the magical number 360, of course. It does not matter which horoscope you have in your hand you will have 360 degrees within it. These 360 degrees represent one 24-hour day. Therefore, the entirety of one's birth chart is the motion of a single 24-hour day here on Earth. When you look further into the 30 degrees contained within each sign, there is even more interesting significance. Certain degrees are believed to hold greater meaning within a birth chart than others. These degrees are referred to as Critical degrees.

Critical Degrees

For the Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn), the critical degrees are 0, 13, and 26. For the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius), they are 8-9 degrees and 21-22 degrees. Moving onto the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces), they are 4 and 17 degrees.

If you have a planet or sensitive angle in your chart at any of these degrees, you can undoubtedly expect more focus in that particular area.

Anaretic Degrees

0 degrees of any sign is considered to be a critical degree due to the karmic nature of being at the beginning of the sign. It is said that whatever planet or point is at 0 degrees will be in the very early stages of learning lessons related to that point. Conversely, if a planet or point is at 29 degrees of a sign is called an Anaretic Degree, and it symbolises karmic completion related to that planet or points energy. It is possible that if a person has a birth chart with multiple angles or planets at the Anaretic Degree is or she is a very old soul. There may be a sense of urgency or need to finish up something related to that planet or point energies as well.
